Tony Blair confirms participation in The Amazon and New Economies International Conference in Brazil

The event in Belém will discuss Sustainable Socio-Economic Development

One more international speaker confirmed for The Amazon and New Economies International Conference. The Right Honorable Tony Blair, Prime Minister of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (1997-2007), will give the main lecture on the second day of the event, August, 31st, in Belém (PA).

In his administration, Tony Blair has prioritized environmental issues, with an emphasis on measures against global warming. At the time, the United Kingdom was one of the few countries to achieve the carbon emissions reduction target imposed by the Kyoto Protocol.

Diversity of Audiences
Representatives of forest peoples, civil society, academia, public and private sectors will meet in the capital of the Brazilian state of Pará to address issues involving the Environment, Economy, and Sustainable Development in the Conference, between August 30th and September 1st, 2023.

Finding the balance between socio-economic development and sustainability in the Amazon, where almost 30 million Brazilians live, is not a simple task, but the existing good practices need to be disseminated and maximized. Protecting the Amazon is not an obstacle to development.

International Speakers
In addition to Tony Blair, the President of Colombia (2018-2022), Iván Duque, will be the featured speaker on the third and final day of the Conference. It will be up to the 8th UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, to give the keynote speech on the first day of the event. The president of ICMM, Rohitesh Dhawan, the UNESCO Ambassador for Sustainability, Oskar Metsavaht, Neidinha Suruí, Brazilian activist at the Kanindé Ethno-environmental Defense Association, among others will also be present.

Thematic Diversity
The participants will discuss topics such as: new economies, bioeconomy, circular economy, strategic minerals, carbon market, solidarity economy, ESG, fight against environmental crimes. The focus will be on finding solutions to keep the forest standing and collaborate with building a Green Agenda for the economic transition.
